Spirit-Lifting Thoughts For Every Day of the Year

Where Is Your Security?

JANUARY 5 — Temporal vs. Eternal

Today’s passage: “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”(Matthew 6:19-21)

Today’s prayer: Open my eyes, O Holy Spirit, and help me discern the lasting from the passing.

How Would You React?

JANUARY 4 — Overcoming Fear

Today’s passage: “Fear thou not; for I am with thee; be not dismayed, for I am thy God; I will strengthen thee, yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” (Isaiah 41:10)

Today’s prayer: Thank You for being real to me, Father, so real that I need not worry about Your constant nearness.

Are You Ready To Become New?

JANUARY 1 — Overcoming Procrastination

This Month’s Message: The Magic Words
Saying “thank you” is such a simple thing that it can be easily forgotten. Make sure it is a part of your daily conversation. Focus on those two magic words this month in all your relationships, and observe the transforming effect they have on others, and yourself.

Today’s passage: “Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature; old things are passed away; behold all things become new.” (II Corinthians 5:17)

Today’s prayer: Lord, in the year ahead, help me change the things in my life that need changing.

Make This A Year of Change

A Happy New Year to everyone. Starting today I’ll be posting daily readings from an inspirational book printed over 40 years ago. Back in 1976 Guideposts magazine decided to publish a compilation book of uplifting stories, one for each day of the year and call it Daily Guideposts. The first edition came out in 1977, and 44 years later they’re still publishing it.

Each day throughout 2021 I’ll post an audio clip of myself reading that day’s uplifting message from the 1977 edition of Daily Guideposts.

The Other Side of Pizza

Eight slices or eight nices—which would be more satisfying and fulfilling for you? Here’s another great story by Gaur Gopal Das. And being that it’s food-related I just had to share it. 😉 And yes I do make and eat WFPB pizzas, and they’re DEE-licious!
(In case you’re curious like I was as to how much 500 rupees is in U.S. dollars, it’s a whopping $6.70. I guess rupees stretch more. And I found this on Google:
Q: Is 500 rupees a lot in India?
A: 500 rupees is more than the daily pay of the majority of people in India. So basically a family of 4 can get through a regular day with this amount. It includes food, travel, accommodation, bills, necessary expenses and education.)

Intermittent Fasting—What Is It?

Have you ever intentionally gone without eating for a meal or two—perhaps for religious reasons or because you had no appetite due to an illness? If so, then you’re familiar with the concept of fasting. Intermittent Fasting is simply the absence of food for a prescribed period of time. I practice it myself, eating each day when I feel hungry. So the time of day when I break my fast from the night before might occur at 1 o’clock in the afternoon, or I might go all day without eating and enjoy a nice plant-based meal in the evening. I never eat immediately after waking up.

Below is a TedTalk video from Cynthia Thurlow, a Western medicine trained nurse practitioner and functional nutritionist who is passionate about female hormonal health. She believes that the inherent power of food and nutrition can be your greatest asset to your health and wellness journey. She works one-on-one with female clients and is the creator of Wholistic Blueprint—a 6-week signature program for female hormonal health. She’s also the co-host of Everyday Wellness podcast and a recurring segment contributor on her local ABC affiliate in Washington, D.C.

Cynthia says that two-thirds of women 40-59 years old are overweight and more than half are obese. Intermittent fasting can help women lose weight effectively. It can also have a profound impact on bio-physical profiles, as well as improve self esteem and interpersonal relationships. It is easy to implement, inexpensive and flexible.

What I’ve learned over the past 18 months since going Whole Food Plant-Based is that eating less frequently throughout the day and eating only plant-based foods that my body can use as fuel has helped me lose 25 pounds (and keep it off), has eliminated various chronic aches and pains I was having in my lower back, hands and knees, and makes me feel better physically and mentally. And each day I’m learning new things that make me even better. It’s been easier for me than I thought it would. Before becoming a plant proponent I was a cheese-aholic, but since going WFPB I really haven’t missed cheese at all. I’ve found plant-based alternatives that are just as good. So intermittent fasting is yet another arrow in my Whole Food Plant-Based quiver to help me stay healthy.

Always See the Hidden Mango

I recently watched a video by Gaur Gopal Das and was so impressed with what he said that I wanted to share it here. He is a former Hewlett-Packard engineer who became an Indian lifestyle coach and motivational speaker. In this video he talks about strawberries and mangoes, both healthy and delicious foods we should all be eating. And the advice he shares is relevant to everyone.  So if you find yourself craving some strawberries or mangoes after watching it, by all means give in to that craving and partake of some good fruit. Enjoy!
